The Egyptians believed that the soul should be able to return to the body after death. The mummification process involved removing organs (except for the heart, the receptacle of the soul), drying the body for 70 days with sodium and wrapping it in linen bandages with protective amulets.
The burial of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922, demonstrates the greatness of this tradition: the pharaoh's body rested in three nested sarcophagi, the last of which was made of pure gold weighing 110 kilograms. His famous golden mask became a symbol of ancient Egyptian culture.
